Coveted since the dawn of time
Bentley was founded in 1919. At the time, the brand’s founder, Walter Owen Bentley, wanted to offer more than just powerful, high-performance engines. By creating well-thought-out designs that would envelop drivers and passengers in beauty, he sought to go beyond.
During the 1920s, Bentley won The 24 Hours of Le Mans five times, thanks to a stealth model that hid a 3-litre engine with aluminium pistons and four valves per cylinder under its bonnet. In 1952, Bentley introduced the Continental, a model for a wider public, which it continued to produce until 1965, resuming production in 1984. Today, the Continental is still the best-known Bentley on the market.
Very few cars, including those with hefty price tags, are worthy of the title of works of art. Given its obsession with craftsmanship and unwavering attention to the finest of details, Bentley’s vehicles are veritable art forms. The brand employs thousands of craftsmen in its factories in Britain who hand-stitch the leather of the seats, steering wheels and other components of the various models to ensure the highest quality interiors. Proof that art cannot be bound by time constraints, the interior of a Mulsanne requires around 136 hours of work. Obviously, faux leather is not part of the brand’s vocabulary.
The wood trim on the doors and dashboard are derived from elegant and resistant species such as walnut, and are cut so that the grain of wood respects its natural lines, without cuts, thus ensuring the desired continuity. In an effort to promote environmental sustainability, the company does not cut down any trees: it only selects those that have fallen naturally and whose fibre is always in perfect condition. Wood “hunters” hired by the automaker explore an average of 25,000 square metres of forest before finding the rare pearl that will serve as the raw material for the creation of these mouldings. Ultimately, Bentley’s vehicles are as distinguished as they are ecological.
For an even more personalized interior, Bentley offers its customers the possibility of engraving the wood trim of their choice with various rich materials, such as mother-of-pearl or gold, to form images or textures that artistically express the tastes of its owners.
